More than a decade of devotion to the bamboo flute.
Since 2012, Arjun Bharadwaj has dedicated himself to the bansuri, the ancient bamboo flute of North India. With more than 100 performances across the Bay Area, he has shared the meditative beauty of this instrument at concerts, festivals, and intimate gatherings alike.
Trained in both the gayaki ang (vocal style) and tantrakari ang (instrumental style), Arjun's playing reflects a deep study of classical tradition. Under the guidance of his gurus, Pandit Partha Chatterjee and Shri Mahesh Kale, he continues to explore the vast landscape of raga music—approaching each day as a student, ever discovering new depths in the art form he loves.
Here are some complete Concert Performances. Experience the sound of the bansuri
A serene evening raga from the Purvi thaat, Puriya Dhanashree blends the gravity of Puriya with the romantic essence of Dhanashree. Traditionally performed after sunset, its mood evokes deep contemplation and devotion. This rendition unfolds through an elaborate expansion in Vilambit Ektaal (12 beats) followed by a faster composition in 16 beats, Teentaal.
A traditional winter raga from the Maihar Gharana. This rendition unfolds through Alap, Jod, and Jhala, followed by Gat compositions in Jhaptaal (10 beats) and Teentaal (16 beats).
A beautiful evening raga belonging to the Kalyan thaat, Shuddh Kalyan is known for its pure, ascending melodic phrases and serene, devotional character. Often performed at dusk, it evokes a sense of peaceful surrender and spiritual elevation. In this video, I play a medium tempo bandish in Teentaal (16 beats).
A beloved late-night raga of the Kafi thaat, Bageshri is known for its romantic, introspective mood and gentle melodic movements. Traditionally associated with the sentiment of longing and tender emotion, this raga creates an intimate atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection.
A devotional Kannada bhajan set in Raga Bhoopali, a pentatonic raga known for its simple yet profound beauty. Dasarapadas are sacred compositions by the Haridasas of Karnataka, expressing deep devotion and spiritual longing. The gentle, ascending nature of Bhoopali perfectly complements the bhakti essence of this piece.
